Silence – an invaluable source of wisdom and emotional clarity. In an interview with Knowledge@Wharton, author Pico Iyer describes silence not as the absence of noise, but as the place where “we come upon depth and spaciousness and intimacy.” Pointing to the example of the Dalai Lama, he argues that silence and meditation offer a path to “compassion, peace of mind and clarity.” Iyer recommends periods of silence to all top leaders. “Online is an amazing wonder world, but you have to step back from it in order to see how to navigate it.” In his view, the Zen capitalist serves as a good role model in today’s society. We need capitalism to provide for our material well-being and Zen to make sense of our existence, Iyer concludes.
